1. What is Friendship Hall and why is it important?
Friendship Hall is a vibrant historical building and community gathering space with a rich past. Originally the Clift Rodgers Library, it has served Marshfield Hills for over 125 years. Today, it needs critical exterior repairs to ensure it continues to host programs, performances, and community celebrations for generations to come.
Our capital campaign aims to raise $475,000 over the next two years to fund preservation and improvements.
2. What is the history of Friendship Hall?
- Built in 1897 in the Classical Revival style
- Designed by architect Henry Warren Rogers (1831–1919)
- Ownership transferred to North Community Church in 1950
- Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009
- Renamed Friendship Hall on May 5, 2024
- Friends of Friendship Hall 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in March 2025
Once a library, the hall has evolved into a cornerstone of community life—hosting meetings, programs, celebrations, and performances.
3. What repairs and improvements are planned?
The project will focus on preserving the exterior of the hall, including:
- Full infrastructure assessment and structural review
- Replacing exterior trim, gutters, and downspouts
- Repairing or replacing the portico ceiling
- Replacing all windows and repairing surrounds/headers
- Repairing columns and sills
- Painting trim and columns
4. Who uses Friendship Hall today?
The hall welcomes thousands of residents each year, supporting:
- Community groups and town organizations
- Youth programs and children’s groups
- Wellness programs and neighborhood associations
- Theater productions and musical performances
- Private businesses, church groups, and individuals
- The space remains open to others in the community as well.
5. How much funding has been raised so far?
As of June 2025, we have $182,700 in private commitments.
Next steps:
- Apply for CPC funding in late 2025 (community support at meetings is encouraged)
- Continue pursuing corporate, community, grant, and private donations
6. What is the project timeline?
- Spring 2026: Begin construction
- End of Q3 2026: Completion target
7. What about the bidding process?
- Bids were sent to 7 contractors
- 3 bids reviewed and accepted
- 1 contractor selected after negotiations
